Industrial Hoses

Industrial hose is also known as an industrial rubber hose. It’s one hose that’s used as a connector in all kinds of equipment for industries. Compared with hard hoses, industrial hoses have excellent flexible, and bending features. Industrial hose is used in the more complex, even worse operating environment than a civilian hose. The equipment also has more demanding requirements for the hose, so the industrial hoses have strict specifications and standards from the design, material choice, production, and transportation to the ultimate storage. Industrial hoses are available in a wider range of size options, a vast range of pressure and temperature, and higher chemical resistance.

A hydraulic hose is a high-pressure, synthetic rubber, thermoplastic or Teflon reinforced hose that carries fluid to transmit force within hydraulic machinery. Hydraulic machinery began to be used in the early 1940s when engineers discovered that hydraulic systems were more compact, lighter in weight, and self-lubricating. World War II spurred the development of hydraulic machinery for military applications. The development of flexible hydraulic hoses further opened the way for the development of a wide array of new, high-powered machines based on hydraulic technology.  

Hydraulic Fittings

Hydraulic fittings and adapters are often assumed to be the same. Hydraulic fittings install into other major components to allow the plumbing of hoses and tubes that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. You install fittings into the work ports of pumps, motors, cylinders, and valves to facilitate the connection of tubes and hoses to these major components.

Fittings for hydraulic applications are often made from forged and machined steel, which are extremely strong and rigid. Occasionally, fittings are machined from steel billet, although this is rare. The fitting will include a thread corresponding to the component’s port, but on the other end will include a thread corresponding to the hose end thread form. Adapters are components manufactured to join two or more thread forms or sizes to one another. In some cases, adaptors may also be fittings. For example, if the ORB female cylinder port I spoke of earlier needed to attach to a female JIC hose end, the adapter fitting would be ORB male by JIC male. I should note, ORB adapters are almost always fittings, since their very nature defines a “boss” as a female port in a component.

Conveyor Belting

A conveyor belt is the carrying medium of a belt conveyor system (often shortened to belt conveyor). A belt conveyor system is one of many types of conveyor systems. A belt conveyor system consists of two or more pulleys (sometimes referred to as drums), with an endless loop of carrying medium—the conveyor belt—that rotates about them. One or both of the pulleys are powered, moving the belt and the material on the belt forward. The powered pulley is called the drive pulley while the unpowered pulley is called the idler pulley. There are two main industrial classes of belt conveyors; Those in general material handling such as those moving boxes inside a factory, lightweight conveyor belting, and bulk material handling, heavyweight conveyor belting, such as those used to transport large volumes of resources and agricultural materials, such as grain, salt, coal, sand and more.

Heavy conveyor belts refer to US-style conveyor belts that are interwoven or nonwoven in construction, as opposed to other style belts. Heavy conveyor belts are generally more durable (with better puncture and tear resistance) and have higher lateral rigidity lightweight belts.

Light conveyor belts feature European-style construction, based on plied belts. Thanks to their wide construction modules, they can be made highly flexible to cope with small pulley diameters. Light belts can be installed for almost all materials handling and processing industry applications. High-tech automation usually uses light conveyor belts.

V-Belts, Pulleys, Sheaves

V belts are the basic belt for power transmission. They provide the best combination of traction, speed of movement, the load of the bearings, and long service life. They are generally endless, and their general cross-section shape is roughly trapezoidal (hence the name “V”). The “V” shape of the belt tracks in a mating groove in the pulley (or sheave), with the result that the belt cannot slip off. The belt also tends to wedge into the groove as the load increases—the greater the load, the greater the wedging action—improving torque transmission and making the V-belt an effective solution, needing less width and tension than flat belts. 

There are 3 types of pulleys – drive pulleys, idler pulleys, and driven pulleys, usually referred to as sheaves. The difference between drive pulleys and driven pulleys is that drive pulleys are always secured to a driving shaft through their center hole driving them, (typically by key ways and set screws). Driven pulleys (normally called sheave)s, are driven by ropes, chains, or belts running in depressions around the outer circumference of the pulley. With the depression matching the shape and size of the rope, chain, or belt used to drive it. Depending on its function, driven pulleys (or sheaves) may or may not be attached to shafts through their center holes. Idler pulleys are simply non-working pulleys revolving around a fixed shaft (usually on sealed ball bearings) used to alter or re-direct the direction of drive belts, ropes, or chains.

Roller chain & Sprockets

Sprockets are designed for use with a specific chain. All chains are made to a given standard—with ANSI being the most common in the U.S. Each chain is identified by “pitch,” which refers to the measurement from one roller-pin center to the next roller-pin center of a given chain. ANSI chain pitch is always measured in 1/8” increments. The second most popular is British Standard Chain, in which chain pitch is measured in 1/16” roller-pin-center to roller-pin-center spacing increments and we carry this type of chain as well.  

The term “plain bore” is associated with A-, B- and C-style sprockets, where there is no special machining performed to accommodate keyways or set screws, only a hole to accommodate shaft diameter. Plain bore sprockets typically require additional machining before installation.

The term “finished bore” is associated with B- and C-style sprockets, where the inside diameter of the hub is machined to accommodate a specific shaft diameter: This configuration includes a standard keyway and set screws. Finished bore hubs can also be machined to non-standard yet specific requirements depending on the needs of the application.

There are many types of bearings, each used for different purposes. These include ball bearings, roller bearings, ball thrust bearings, roller thrust bearings, and tapered roller thrust bearings. SA Belt carries a variety of different types of bearings which include, 2 bolt flange, 4 bolt flange, mounted ball bearings, and loose ball bearings.

The purpose of a ball bearing is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads. It achieves this by using at least two races to contain the balls and transmit the loads through the balls. In most applications, one race is stationary and the other is attached to the rotating assembly. Ball bearings tend to have lower load capacity for their size than other kinds of rolling-element bearings due to the smaller contact area between the balls and races. However, they can tolerate some misalignment of the inner and outer races.

Bearings that are mounted within a flanged housing are used when the bearing mounting surface is perpendicular to a shaft axis. They are commonly available in two, three, or four-hole configurations. Two-bolt flanged ball bearing units have a diamond or winged-shape with 2 holes for mounting. 4-Bolt Flanged Bearing Units and the 2-bolt flanged bearing units have bearings that can be moved and aligned to better accommodate long shafts.

A pillow block usually refers to housing with an included anti-friction bearing. A pillow block refers to any mounted bearing where the mounted shaft is in a parallel plane to the mounting surface, and perpendicular to the centerline of the mounting holes, as contrasted with various types of flange blocks or flange units.
