The Natural Bridge Caverns were named after the 60-foot natural limestone rock formation that forms the entrance to the cave. The name is derived from what is believed to be the natural water source that existed at the entrance. Many believe that water may have been used by prehistoric man, as it is still possible for underground water sources to exist in limestone caves. The limestone is believed to have existed prior to the present time, which means that it is long been the site of water that was held in place by underground strata. This is the reason why the Natural Bridge Caverns have maintained the original limestone cave floor for hundreds of thousands of years. The limestone is made of very fine grains, and while they are not extremely heavy, they hold up to tremendous amounts of pressure and are not damaged easily by even the heaviest of equipment. The Natural Bridge Caverns offer visitors an incredible scenic view of the beautiful Sabine National Forest and the San Saba Bay.
